Before each swing you will be emailed your flight itinerary, on your first visit to site you will also receive a welcome information pack/email. For domestic flights you should arrive 1 hour before a flight, flights board 30 minutes prior to departure. You may take 2 x 10kg checked luggage and a carry on – all chefs must bring their own knife kit to site. Flights from Perth to the Pilbara vary but are generally 1.5 hours in duration. When you arrive at the airport you can collect any checked luggage and the ESS bus will transport you to site where you can check in.

Each site has different facilities but in general all living accommodation is the same – you will be given a room with a bed, aircon, wardrobe, TV with local stations, side table, and a bathroom area with a shower, toilet and vanity, there is also free WIFI and a port for ethernet. (Note: Telstra network receives service in Mining Area C). Each week you will receive towels, linen and soap – housekeeping will do a mid-swing clean to service your room. There are laundry rooms onsite for you to wash clothing free of charge.

Each village has a great range of facilities available to use: gym, pool, tennis courts, sporting pitches, BBQ areas, relaxation spaces with ping-pong, pool tables and books. Each site has different facilities available. Tastelife programs have been set up to support your total mental and physical wellbeing. There are also social events throughout the month and live entertainment. There is a retail store on site that sells snack foods, drinks, coffee and a selection of convenience items and toiletries.

The dining areas serve food from 0400-0830 breakfast, 1600-2030 dinner and lunch is available as takeaway from the crib area. A range of foods are on offer including vegetarian/vegan options. There is a tavern on site that sells low alcohol beer and wine. While alcohol consumption is allowed outside of shifts, all employees are tested and must rate 0.00 before shift commences. Random alcohol and drug testing are carried out on most sites, you must show a zero reading for both drugs and alcohol if tested.

Shifts are generally 12 hours long and rotate with day and night shifts. Shift start and end times vary based on your section and each site’s operational hours. You will be inducted onsite by your department supervisor and will set up with a buddy for your first swing. Each shift has a (p)re-start meeting where, safety, service, menu and preparation will be discussed with the chef team and tasks will be assigned.

All meals are cooked to bulk specifications based on the occupancy of site. You will need to multi-task and manage your time effectively to produce high quality dishes that are well presented and meet the menu requirements daily. Being a Compass chef is also a customer facing roll, you will be expected to greet customers and assist them with their food choices as well as answer any questions or dietary requests. Communication and team work are very important in the kitchen environment and you will find your team becomes a second family away from home.

Saftey comes first in all processes and you will be trained on the equipment you are required to use – extra training may be required if you are working with specialist equipment. Strong food safety, hygiene and allergen knowledge is essential – it is a part of every process in the kitchen. Refresher training is given periodically to ensure your knowledge is current. Truck deliveries are managed by supervisors, you may be asked to assist in the receival and storage of stock.

It is important to us that you are walking into an environment that feels safe, clean, tidy and systems are in place – which makes you want to come to work, you want to expand, you want to give your knowledge, you want to give your all!
